OUR VISION
THE PROBLEMKidney failure is a prevalent condition in Sudan, affecting a significant number of individuals. Currently, there are around 6,000 patients diagnosed with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), which is the final stage of chronic kidney disease. These patients rely on dialysis for their survival, and they receive support through the national kidney program. Additionally, there are an estimated 700 patients undergoing dialysis in private centers and hospitals.
Due to the lack of official statistics on ESRD patients in Sudan, the actual number is likely to be much higher than the reported 6,000 cases. Based on the global prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD), our foundation estimates that there could be between 16,000 and 21,000 ESRD patients in Sudan. This means that approximately 9,000 to 14,000 patients may be at risk of dying from renal failure, many of whom may remain undiagnosed.
Each day, approximately 11 new cases of ESRD are registered in Khartoum, highlighting the pressing need for dialysis treatment. Unfortunately, there is a minimum waiting period of two months to access a dialysis chair in Khartoum, and the wait time is even longer in Omdurman. It is expected that the waiting period in other cities will be significantly extended as well.
Tragically, there is a high possibility that many patients may lose their lives during this waiting period due to the numerous complications associated with renal failure.
THE SOLUTIONIn order to provide practical assistance to a large number of these patients, the Foundation is presently engaged in the construction of a charity center dedicated to kidney diseases and transplantation.
Through generous donations, our foundation has acquired a 3,000 square meter plot of land located in Alhijra, Omdurman, Sudan.
The foundation envisions a five-story charity center, and the construction will be carried out in three phases, subject to the availability of funds.
CONSTRUCTIONHACF successfully obtained a 3,000 square meters land in Alhijra, Omdurman from Alaoghaf. The long-term plan is to construct a building of 5 stories to be completed through (3) phases depending on availability of funds.
PROJECT PHASES
Phase I - Charity Hemodialysis Center - Completed
This phase will complete the ground floor (25 m x 25 m) of the plan. This center will accommodate up to 60 hemodialysis machines which will provide dialysis to 540 ESRD patients, both children and adults. The foundation was planning to open by 6/1/2020 with 32 machines (with 28 machines to be added soon after a completing the expansion). Due to the significant delays from the recent ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the opening has been delayed to Oct 2021.
Phase II - Charity Kidney Transplant Center
This phase will complete the first floor (an area of about 800 square meters). the completion of phase II will finish building skeleton construction together with phase I. It is urgently needed since transplantation is the optimal treatment for ESRD patients. Importantly, most of our ESRD patients are young and have living donors, which will make transplantation the ideal treatment. We had already spoken with Three (s) Sudanese transplant surgeons in USA, who indicated that this will be very achievable (including two operating rooms: ~10.5m x 7.5m each). We are also extremely happy to share with you that we secured the necessary funds (a $1,000,000) to complete phase (II) (Transplant Center). This fund is coming from a private donor via Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) to accomplish the intended work.
Phase III - Kidney Diseases and Transplantation charity Hospital
The hospital facility will be situated on the upper three floors (floors 2-4) of the charity center. It will offer free care to patients suffering from various forms of kidney diseases, including chronic kidney disease (CKD). The hospital's primary focus will be on expanding dialysis services and providing comprehensive care for renal patients.
One crucial aspect is the foundation's commitment to providing dialysis treatment to patients with acute kidney injury (AKI). Currently, these patients receive dialysis at Bahri hospital, but due to inadequate medical care, many end up on permanent dialysis. The foundation aims to intervene and provide appropriate treatment to these patients, with the goal of potentially taking them off dialysis altogether.
Moreover, the foundation recognizes the limited availability of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), such as continuous venovenous hemodialysis (CVVHD), in Sudan. CRRT is a critical treatment modality for dialysis patients, particularly those with hemodynamic instability, such as low blood pressure, who cannot tolerate standard hemodialysis. By establishing CRRT services, the foundation intends to address this crucial gap in renal care.
Additionally, the foundation will establish a peritoneal dialysis program, recognizing the urgent need for this modality in Sudan. This program will offer an alternative method of dialysis for patients, providing greater accessibility and convenience.
Within this phase of construction, the hospital will also focus on expanding transplantation services and providing specialized care related to vascular access for dialysis patients. These initiatives aim to improve the overall quality of kidney care and increase the range of treatment options available to renal patients in Sudan.

SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONS
The HACF Center for Kidney Diseases and Transplantation will serve as a vital resource for patients in need of renal care in Sudan. It will offer accessible and free dialysis services, along with comprehensive vascular access services. Additionally, the center will provide future transplant services and other essential renal treatments to address the needs of our vulnerable and suffering renal patients who are seeking any form of assistance.
The center's construction and operation will be designed in a manner that facilitates the implementation of international standards of renal care in Sudan. This will be achieved by transferring knowledge, expertise, and advanced technology from renowned medical institutions in the United States, Europe, and the Gulf area to Sudan. By incorporating these advancements, the center will play a pivotal role in elevating the quality of renal care in the country.
Moreover, the HACF Center for Kidney Diseases and Transplantation will act as a reference center, providing guidance and support to other renal centers in Sudan. Through various training and educational programs, the center will enhance the skills and knowledge of physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, ensuring they are well-equipped to deliver optimal renal care. This collaborative approach aims to uplift the overall standards of renal care across the country, benefitting patients beyond the walls of the center itself.

WHY SUPPORT US
The foundation is asking for funding to help build the kidney center
Our dedication to this cause is evident in the contributions made by our founder and board members totaling more than $500,000 in initial funds to initiate this project. Additionally, we have successfully raised over $1,000,000 through targeted campaigns in collaboration with SAPA and other Sudanese organizations.
To date, the foundation has received over $2 million in generous donations, with more than $1 million available to complete Phase II of the project. These funds are under the supervision of The Qatar Red Crescent Society and will be managed by their Sudanese office to facilitate the smooth progress of Phase II's construction.
We deeply appreciate your support in helping us reach our goals and provide essential care to those in need. Your contribution will make a significant impact on the lives of renal patients and aid us in realizing our vision of improving kidney care in Sudan. We kindly request your generous donation and support to assist with the monthly running costs of the center. The approximate monthly running cost for the center is $20,000 (twenty thousand dollars). While we have received monthly pledges from compassionate individuals like yourself, it is not sufficient to cover the expenses entirely. Help us with your generous donation

WHY ARE WE DIFFERENT
Habib Alrahman Charity Foundation is different than other projects like it because of the following:
The foundation will assume responsibility for the operation and management of the center, ensuring that it is efficiently run by a dedicated and well-trained staff. This team will include doctors with extensive knowledge and qualifications gained from training in the United States and the United Kingdom. Notable individuals such as Dr. Hatim Hassan (founder and President of the foundation) and Dr. Mohamed Margni (Vice President of the foundation), along with other board members, have demonstrated their capability and commitment by investing significant personal funds into this noble cause.
To ensure that the center adheres to the highest medical standards, a dedicated and highly trained management team will oversee day-to-day operations, implementing practices comparable to those found in the United States.
The foundation has entered into an agreement with the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Sudan. As part of this agreement, the MOH will supply the center with the necessary consumables for dialysis treatment, including dialyzers, lines, and fluids. Additionally, the MOH will provide a monthly allocation to cover a portion of the operating expenses, such as salaries for nurses, biomedical engineers, and utility bills. While these funds will cover approximately 40% to 65% of the operating expenses, the foundation will supplement the remaining costs through donations generated from continuous fundraising efforts. This will ensure that hemodialysis treatments can be provided to patients free of charge, allowing individuals to receive the necessary care without financial burden.
